Today I added a very basic auction feature here on the main Jigup site. Any member can bid and post auctions. So why not join up and give it a try?

The log in here at the main Jigup site is different to the forums log in, so two seperate accounts are required for each area. If you are a member of the forum, then use the same ID and password when joining here jigup.com. I have tried to combine the two user accounts so only one log in is required. It may be a little buggy but should work as long as your ID and password for the forum and here are identical.

The auction submission are very basic and you will need to have your own pictures hosted elsewhere (at photobucket for instance) but its free to post an auction so you haven’t really anything to lose, have you!

If you give it a try then good luck but please keep it clean and legal.

This is intended as an ongoing article that will be updated on occasion until it serves some kind of useful purpose to the reader, once complete this introductory note will disappear. Please note that I am speaking from a personal perspective as a web developer installing and reviewing Open Source Software. I would be only too pleased to add your appropriate comments suggestions or views.

I believe that many free open source ecommerce alternatives have been suppressed in the past by larger corporations because the free alternatives could prove a threat to their future profits. I’m not naming any names but we know who they are, you only have to take a look at Craigslist and eBays failed attempts to buy a governing stake in it to realize that if any web site or viable free software alternative were to arise it would be bought out or suppressed. I have been searching for the Holy Grail amongst OS Ecommerce systems for some time now, the Multi-Shop Cart or Shopping Mall. I have yet to find it, or at least a viable version that works efficiently without glaring bugs that render it useless to anyone without a PHP PHD!

I’ll leave the subject of Multi-Shop software for the moment and move onto Open Source Ecommerce carts and the various versions that I am currently aware of. If you do a search on Google for ecommerce software you’ll possibly find “Magento” close at the top, Magento is a relatively new shopping cart solution, it’s very resource hungry but if you can get your head around it’s bewildering back end then it may almost certainly be the most impressive cart out there. I’m currently toying with it for the third time and still can’t quite get to grips with it.

One of the oldest pieces of free shopping cart software available is OSCommerce it’s been around for roughly 10 years, it’s relatively easy to install and not very complicated to administer, many small vendors use it or one of its off shoots and some not so small ones also. OSC had remained pretty stagnant with no updates or newer versions for quite some years, this created a vacuum for others to create off shoots, like Cre-Loaded, OSC Max and Zen Cart. Many consider these to be superior to the original or at least until the original OSCommerce was updated.

That’s all, I will add a list later, for now, I’ll continue dreaming about the ultimate Open Source free to install multi platform, host your own store but be part of a massive international shopping mall come thrift shop…

The classifieds have now been removed and I’m toying with the idea of installing an auction script based on the old PHP Auction platform (modified). Is it worth the bother though? It’s quite simple to install and operate but would anyone join to list let alone buy? Are auctions dead? Perhaps there’s a need for some other kind of system? If anyone would like to comment please do. Anyhow, watch out for an auction option, it’ll be testing in Beta soon and live and free to both buy and sell.

I’ve just added more categories to the classifieds ads section. No ads yet! Well I haven’t bothered listing any myself but anyone can list and I’ll get round to listing something myself soon, possibly a comic or two, of the twenty odd thousand I have that are currently causing my house to subside. No kidding I actually had a builder tell me that the crack in the wall extending down from the ceiling was due to the ten boxes of comics I had on my shelf! Well, he was an idiot but I’ve got to get rid of them anyway, so watch this space.

If you’d like to sell something on the classified ads page then don’t wait for me to get my rear into gear, go ahead, what you waiting for, it’s free so there’s nothing to lose? What’s going to be the first listing? You might even make history (ha ha). No illegal items, sexual services or scams will be published.

Any extra categories can be added, if there isn’t one there that suits just hit the contact button and let me know.

How do you like the new slogan? Getting Jiggy with IT. Getting loose and dressing fly with Information technology! Seriously though the honeymoons over and its time to get down to the nitty gritty, 24 hour arguments, house keeping and heavy drinking sessions in the local bar. There’s a new logo, not brilliant I know but it will have to do. Classified ads are up and running where I’ve submitted the very first ad ever, for a 1977 Donald Duck soap unused and boxed no less, it wasn’t given to me 32 years ago I found it in a junk shop, I’m not that ecclectic!. Anyone can place an ad, theres no need to register, after placing an ad it will need to be approved by me and you will be given a unique code that will enable you to edit it in the future. That’s about it for now…more to follow..
